Our Story

Zarraffa’s Coffee was founded in 1996 by
Kenton and Rachel Campbell.

The company is proudly 100% Australian owned and operated with its head office and roastery based in Eagleby, halfway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Zarraffa’s (pronounced Za-raff-as) comes from the Arabic word ‘Zarafa‘ which means ‘Giraffe’. the Masai Giraffe typically inhabits the savannahs of Kenya and Ethiopia, the origin of coffee.

Originally a roasting house, Zarraffa’s Coffee first began operating from the backstreets of Southport on the Gold Coast, QLD. Back then, customers would come in for their daily coffee and enjoy a fresh brew while perched on a hessian bag full of green coffee beans that were yet to be roasted. From that first store in Southport on the Gold Coast, the Zarraffa’s Coffee business has evolved into an award-winning enterprise, now serving customers in over 70 locations across Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales.

Leading the way in retail coffee innovation, Zarraffa’s Coffee developed its popular drive thru store concept in 2009, providing customers with quality coffee and added convenience. The company’s expansion to the West Coast in 2012 enabled Zarraffa’s to introduce its unique blend of coffee to a whole new region of coffee lovers. The company now operates its network of stores and drive thru locations on both sides of the country, with expansion planned in these key geographical areas in the coming years.

Zarraffa’s Coffee has fostered a culture where everyday customers can access great coffee and be a part of this Australian success story. A commitment to product, service, freshness, convenience and a genuine love of coffee, is what makes the Zarraffa’s Coffee experience ‘more than just a cup of coffee.’

The Zarraffa’s Coffee blends and origins, characteristics and roasting profiles were designed and developed by the founders of Zarraffa’s and remain a consistent factor in the great taste of the coffee-based drinks at each location.

Zarraffa’s Roastery supplies all Zarraffa’s Coffee stores Australia-wide with the coffee arriving at each store freshly roasted and ready to be enjoyed at its flavour peak.

Fostering a special bond with the country of Kenya, and in particular the town of Meru, Zarraffa’s Roastery has formed a ‘trade, not aid’ relationship, enabling us to give back to the communities from which we source our beans. This means that for each cup of coffee that is purchased, together with our customers, we are contributing to the well-being of our international coffee growers, families and their communities.

Community

Since our inception in 1996, Zarraffa’s Coffee has always felt compelled to give back to the very communities from which we operate.

For over two decades we have taken an active involvement in our communities through large scale and local community initiatives. coined our ‘Backyard Policy’, we support causes impacting our own community and coffee and conservation communities around the world.

As we’ve grown, so has our backyard grown, especially in the past decade when we established trading partnerships with international coffee growing communities including the Meru Co-op in Mount Kenya. Zarraffa’s Coffee has always taken pride in being able to give back. Combining our philanthropic intent and our deep history of specialty coffee, mired in our roots as an Australian-owned company, we are growing a philanthropic ethos of being ‘More Than Just a Cup of Coffee’.

In practice, each cup of coffee purchased does more than deliver a great beverage, it symbolises what we at Zarraffa’s are about and our commitment to our backyard, to where our coffee comes from, to charity, to ‘trade, not aid’ relationships, to family business, to conservation and more. Giving back helps Zarraffa’s grow as an Australian-owned and operated business and your support of our family of stores means that we can all do our bit for our backyard…one cup at a time.
